Getting started
What is Parampara?
A private vault on your phone for everything your family would need to find: insurance, bank accounts and FDs, PPF and EPF, property papers, the Will, demat and mutual funds, nominee details, Aadhaar and PAN, gold. You write down what exists and where it is kept.
Do I have to upload all my documents?
No. Writing down what you have and where to find it is enough. You can attach photos or PDFs of the papers to any entry if you want to.
Where do I start?
With one entry. Your main insurance policy takes about two minutes: what it is, which company, who the nominee is, and where the papers are kept.
How much does it cost?
It is free to start. You can keep your family's most important things safe without paying anything.
Is there an iPhone app?
Not yet. Parampara is on Android today and iPhone comes after. The app is in English for now.
Signing in
My sign-in code did not arrive.
Check the spam folder first, then check the email address on the screen for a typing mistake. You can ask for the code again after a short wait. If it still does not come, write to support@myparampara.in from that address and we will look.
What is the difference between the code and my passphrase?
The code we email proves the address is yours and signs you in. Your passphrase opens your vault, and only you know it. We never see it, which is why we cannot read your vault.
What if I forget my passphrase?
Use your recovery code. You are shown it when you create your vault. If you did not save it, make a new one under Settings, Recovery code, while your vault is open; a new code replaces the old one. Keep it somewhere that is not only this phone.
What if I lose both my passphrase and my recovery code?
Then nobody can open that vault, including us. This is the cost of a vault we cannot read, and it is why the app asks you to save the recovery code.
Fingerprint unlock stopped working.
After several failed tries, Android pauses the fingerprint reader for a while. Your passphrase always works. If your phone has locked the reader, unlock the phone once with its PIN or pattern and try again.
I have a new phone.
Install Parampara, sign in with the same email address and enter your passphrase. Your vault is there. Fingerprint unlock is per phone, so turn it on again in Settings.
Safety and privacy
Can you read my vault?
No. Your vault is locked on your phone with a key made from your passphrase, and the passphrase never leaves your phone. We store only the locked version.
Who can see my vault?
Only you, until you choose to share. You decide which family members can see which areas, and when.
Where is my information kept?
On servers in India, in locked form.
Why can't I take a screenshot?
On Android the app blocks screenshots and screen recording on purpose, and hides itself in the recent apps view, so that what is in your vault stays in your vault.
Why do notifications say so little?
A lock screen is a public place. A notification tells you that something happened and never what or who. For reminders you can choose how much they say, and amounts never appear.
Family
I invited someone and nothing happened.
Two steps have to happen. They must accept the invitation, signed in with the same email address you invited. Then you open Family and give them access. Until both are done, nothing is shared. You can send the invitation again from their page in Family.
I was invited, but I see nothing in the app.
Sign in with the email address the invitation was sent to. The invitation appears on your home screen and under Shared with you. If the person chose "only in an emergency", you will see their vault listed but nothing inside it.
What does "only in an emergency" mean?
The person sees nothing for now. If something happens to you, they can ask for access from their app. You are told at once, and you get the number of days you chose to decline. If you do not decline, what you shared opens to them.
Can my family see the papers I attached?
Yes, for the areas you shared with them. Photos and PDFs open for them the same way the entries do.
How do I remove someone, or leave a vault?
To remove someone, open their page in Family and remove them. It takes effect at once. To leave a vault that was shared with you, open it and choose Leave this vault. The owner is told.
What is Check-in?
An optional safety net. Every 30, 90 or 180 days, Parampara makes sure you are around; opening the app counts. If we cannot reach you for a long while, we remind you, then tell the family members you chose, and only after 44 days open what you had already shared with them. It is off until you turn it on.
Will my family be told before anything opens?
Yes, always. Two weeks after a missed check-in we tell them that we cannot reach you and ask them to check on you. Nothing opens for another 30 days after that, and any time you open the app it all resets.
Reminders
What does Radar do?
It reminds you before a premium is due, before an FD matures, before locker rent is payable. Your phone works the dates out from your own entries, and nothing about them is sent to us. Radar is off until you turn it on.
Your account
The app is asking me to update.
Please do. Updates come from the Play Store, take a minute, and change nothing in your vault. An old version can stop working with newer features such as family sharing, so at times the app will insist.
How do I change my email address?
Open Settings and tap your email address. We send a code to the old address and the new one, so nobody can move your account without both.
How do I delete my account?
In the app: Settings, Advanced, Delete my account. Nothing is erased for 14 days, in case you change your mind: sign in before then and you can keep your account. After that your account, your vault and every attached file are erased, and that cannot be undone. No longer have the app? Do it at myparampara.in/delete-account.
Can I use it for my parents?
Yes. Many people set Parampara up for a parent. You can help them add their information and choose who can see it.
